Structural steel crack propagation experimental and numerical analysis

This paper presents an investigation on the crack propagation testing for three grades of structural steel material. The methodology uses experimental analysis with a test setup based ASTM E647 standard and compact tension (CT) piece, and, finite element analyses (FEA) ANSYS separating, morphing adaptive remeshing (SMART) tool. FEA CT modelling is first used to develop front face compliance functions relate mouth opening displacement (CMOD) length. A set pieces were manufactured then cyclically loaded Instron 8801 load frame CMOD was measured against number cycles. material fracture mechanics fatigue property estimated giving growth rates Paris Law. models updated Law coefficients SMART performed numerically compared results. study showed that hybrid numerical can be estimate properties successfully reasonable accuracy in controlled laboratory environment.
